BERRI COMMUNITY CORRECTIONS

Berri Community Correctional Centre (as part of the South Australian Department for Correctional Services) is involved in administering the supervision of offenders on various orders imposed by the Courts and the Parole Board within the Riverland area. Its roles include giving professional advice to courts on the background of offenders, possible sanctioning options and ensuring that offenders are provided with opportunities to address their offending behavior. There are various therapeutic intervention programs that are delivered on a regular basis to address offence related issues involving substance abuse, anger management, victim awareness and domestic violence. Berri Community Correctional Centre is currently committed to the ongoing delivery of a 12 week Stopping Violence therapeutic program for men, which examines and addresses the use of domestic violence and the effects of this on their partners, associated family members and the community. Future therapeutic programs will be delivered involving mandated and non-mandated clients from within the Riverland community

CAMHS

The Child & Adolescent Mental Heath Service (CAMHS) is a free counselling and therapy service provided by Southern Adelaide Health Service to the Riverland community. CAMHS assists children, young people and their families to find solutions to a range of emotional, behavioural, psychiatric and family relationship problems. Riverland CAMHS employs four clinical staff with backgrounds in social work and psychology. Program areas include School Support, Youth Therapy, Community Therapy, and Early Intervention. CAMHS also has a visiting child & adolescent psychiatrist. CAMHS therapists provide visiting services to the major towns in the Riverland area. Common problems dealt with by CAMHS include: family crisis, conflict, stress for young people, grief and loss, behavioural problems, attempted suicide, depression, fears and anxieties, eating disorders and the effects of child abuse. Referrals to CAMHS can be made by general practitioners, allied health professionals, schools and other community groups with client consent. Riverland Domestic Violence Unit

The RDVU provides: Accommodation and support for women and children experiencing domestic violence. Also support for women not needing accommodation, counselling & referrals to other agencies. Outreach services to Riverland Region incorporating "Phoenix Network" web cams so you can talk to the RDVU without travel. They are located at Pinnaroo Hospital, Swan Reach Area School, Brown's Well Area School, Waikerie

Housing S.A.

The South Australian Housing Trust provides a broad range of housing services to the people of South Australia. Our Services include the provision of public housing, private rental assistance as well as housing programs that cater for young people and customers with special needs. Services are accessable from one of our 17 metropolitan or country offices. The Housing Trust is also responsible for maintaining private rental standards through its Housing Improvement Branch.

Police


Domestic Violence is a crime and police will take action. South Australia Police aim to protect and increase the safety of victims of domestic violence.

If you have been a victim of domestic violence or if you are seeking advice or assistance please ring 131444.

Riverland Criminal Investigation Branch has two female officers with specialised training in domestic violence and they can assist with advice on

  • Safety plans
  • Restraint orders
  • Police and family court custody issues
  • Assault charges
  • Referral to agencies for assistance/counselling
  • Court support
Police can apply for a restraint order for you. If you have been assaulted, threatened, harassed, intimidated or had your property damaged you can apply for a restraint order. A restraint order is a court order which prevents a person ("the defendant") from behaving towards you ("victim/complainant") in a violent, harassing, threatening manner. The defendant can be ordered not to come to your home, follow or watch you or send you messages. If you have been assaulted police can arrest the defendant for the assault, the defendant can also have bail conditions placed on them not to return home and require them to live somewhere else.
